A particularly productive paving season

As paving season winds down, the Board of Selectmen looked back at a productive year for public works. But, if you’ve been looking around thinking, “Wow, that $1 million paving budget has gone a long way,” you may be (mildly) disappointed to learn that Stafford had about $300,000 of ARPA money to spend on paving before the end of this year. So, according to John Whetton, Director of Public Works in Stafford, this year’s paving progress has cost about $1.2 million. Still, Whetton thinks there may be money left over after the final bills for the latest projects come in, leaving room to get more done in the spring.

At the November 4, 2026, Board of Selectmen meeting, Whetton listed the calendar year’s paving accomplishments. He made a special point of noting that it’s not the fiscal year but the calendar year.

  • About three miles on Hampden Road

  • About one and half miles on Colburn Road

  • Clinton Street

  • Edgwood Street (along with the sidewalks)

  • Sections of Westford Avenue

  • Longview Acres Subdivision

  • 1,500 feet of Gulf Rd (overlay)

  • Hydeville (smaller section overlays)

He estimates that totals about 7.8 miles improved this year, or almost 8% of all asphalt roads in town. With a new road scan completed, Whetton also noted his and the First Selectman are working on a more comprehensive plan that takes road conditions, connectivity, critical facilities, drainage conditions, and overall infrastructure needs.
