Is a lake district in Staffordville’s future?

It’s not often you see the people of Stafford clamoring for a new tax, but some of folks in town want to create a “Staffordville Lake Tax District for the sole purpose of maintaining the water quality of the Staffordville Lake Reservoir” according to the legal notice for the Special Town Meeting called for just this purpose. This Town Meeting will be a bit different than others, as only eligible electors can vote: ”In accordance with said statutory requirements, the Board of Selectmen hereby calls a meeting of all electors residing within the proposed boundaries of said District…” 

A detailed list of eligible voters is available on the town website but what it boils down to is this: only people whose primary residences fall within the proposed Lake District can vote. Translation: if you’ve got a second home on the lake, you aren’t eligible to vote.

In addition to the creation of the lake district, electors will vote to elect officers of the Staffordville Lake Tax District, and set the annual meeting of the Staffordville Lake Tax District.

While most town residents aren’t eligible to vote, everyone is eligible to attend and learn more. So, put the meeting on your calendar for August 19, 2026 at 6:30 p.m.
