The Stafford Rotary Club will host its annual “Rotary Means Community” event on Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, celebrating the people and organizations who make Stafford a stronger, more caring community.

The event highlights the Rotary philosophy of “Service Above Self,” recognizing individuals, groups, and local businesses whose efforts improve the lives of others in Stafford. While Rotary members dedicate themselves to service locally and around the world, this special event focuses on honoring those in the community who embody that same spirit, whether or not they are members of Rotary.

Through the Service Above Self Awards, the Stafford Rotary Club will recognize community members who volunteer their time, support local initiatives, uplift neighbors, and help strengthen the fabric of the town through acts of service and leadership.

This year’s event will feature Rotarian Chris Paradiso as the guest speaker. Paradiso is widely known for his passion for community involvement and leadership, and he will share reflections on the importance of giving back and the power of community service.

The 2026 Service Above Self Award for Local Business will be presented to Stafford Veterinary Center, recognizing the organization’s extraordinary commitment to supporting the Stafford community. Through sponsorships of local organizations such as the Stafford Boosters Club, Stafford Music & Drama Club, Stafford Garden Club, and Stafford Little League, as well as support for the SHS Safe Grad Program and community events like Applefest and the Polar Bear Plunge, the veterinary center consistently gives back. Their “Pets in Need” program provides free medical care for homeless pets and animals belonging to individuals receiving assistance, while the hospital also partners with animal rescue organizations, supports the Stafford Police K-9 Unit, hosts student volunteers and scouting groups, and contributes to numerous local initiatives benefiting families and youth.

The Service Above Self Award for Local Group will be presented to Safe Net Ministries, a Stafford Springs nonprofit dedicated to providing emergency assistance to residents in need. Serving individuals and families in Stafford, Union, and Willington, Safe Net Ministries operates a food pantry, provides clothing and essential resources, and works closely with local clergy and social service organizations to ensure those facing hardship receive support. Acting as a true community safety net, the organization continues to assist local residents even during times when government assistance programs are reduced or unavailable.

The Service Above Self Award for an Individual will be presented to Rich Smith, whose nearly five decades of dedication to Stafford Little League have shaped the experience of generations of young athletes. From his early days as a player to serving as a coach, coordinator, vice president, and president, Smith has helped transform the league into one of the region’s most respected youth programs. His leadership has led to improved facilities, strong community partnerships, and sustained success on and off the field, all while emphasizing that Little League is about developing character, teamwork, and community pride as much as it is about baseball and softball.

Community members are encouraged to attend the Rotary Means Community event and help celebrate these outstanding recipients. By attending, residents can show their appreciation for the individuals, organizations, and businesses that dedicate their time and resources to making Stafford a better place to live. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by attending the event, helping ensure a strong community showing in support of these remarkable local leaders and volunteers.
