Eight members of the renewed Economic Development Commission (EDC) gathered at Town Hall on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. The question at the heart of the discussion was, “Where do we go from here?”
Among other things, EDC Chair Jacob Long wants to start with the basics to gain an understanding of Stafford's existing businesses and find a foundation to build on. From data centers to meat processing plants, there were plenty of ideas, and the usual complaints about zoning regulations, but one idea ended with an accepted motion.
Commissioner Charles “Chuck” Alfano had done his homework and came to the table armed with a lot of information, most importantly, information about the Connecticut Main Street Center (CMSC). Stafford was once a member of this group, but eventually let it lapse. According to Alfano, yearly membership costs $1,000 but comes with benefits.
The problem, of course, is that the EDC has no budget. In years past, it’s had up to $3,000, but First Selectman Bill Morrison said that’s been eliminated. Still, when the group started talking about the possibility of fundraising, Morrison said he hoped the town could be involved in funding something he thought would have valuable returns. “Come up with the problem and let us try to solve it,” he said. Later, he said that as long as he gets a request from the EDC, he can bring it to the Board of Selectmen to consider.
Eventually, a motion was made, a vote was taken, and the EDC decided to rejoin CMSC.
