At the March 5, 2025 Board of Selectmen meeting First Selectman Bill Morrison and Rick Hartenstein voted to accept the resignation of Kurt Vail, who was not present at the meeting. Morrison read Vail's letter of resignation which cited a new work schedule as the reason for his departure. The letter did note that he would continue to serve Stafford as State Representative. The resignation was effective on March 3, 2025.
Morrison publicly thanked Vail for his "dedication to the town."
Hartenstein said, "Kurt's always been a good voice," noting that he often brought a different perspective to the selectboard.
You may be wondering what happens now.
Because Vail is a Republican, the Republican Town Committee has 30 days to propose a replacement. That person can be Republican or unaffiliated. Beth Dadalt, Executive Assistant to the First Selectman, said that according to state statute the two other selectman can accept or reject the RTC's nominee. If, for some reason, they did not find the nominee acceptable, the RTC would have to put forth another candidate.
